Deciding to sell it all and and travel for a year as a family is a big decision! Here are some of our most Frequently Asked Questions If you would like to know more feel free to ask us!
What Made You Decide to Sell Everything and Travel For a Year?
We currently live in an area with a very hot real estate market. Our original plan was to sell our home, pay off our debts and downsize to a smaller house closer to our daughters’ school. This would eliminate the 3 hours of commuting I usually do to take the girls to and from school, and also reduce some of the financial pressures of being a single income family.
When it came time to purchase another home we couldn’t find anything suitable and felt pressured to make a decision to pay over our desired budget. So, in a moment of frustration I said, “Let’s just take a break. Let’s just take the kids out of school for a year, travel, and see what happens with the market when we come back.” Then, Thang said the magic word, “OK”.
You’re Taking Your Daughters Out of School. What Will You Do For Their Education?
Our daughters will be missing grade 2 and preschool while we are abroad. For those who don’t know my girls, Avery (6) is an avid reader and loves math. She has already excelled in the coming year’s curriculum expectations. Lily (3) can already write basic words and loves to read like her big sister. Both have a thirst for knowledge and love geography. Their excitement to visit all the places they’ve read about is amazing to see. The girls’ school has been extremely supportive of our decision to travel with them for a year. They are providing resource materials that I can use while we are away to keep up Avery’s studies and help her stay on track.
How Are You Funding Your Trip?
We have sold our home and are in the process of selling most of our belongings. We will be using some of the proceeds from our sale to fund our trip. I am in the process of building our brand in hopes of working with some amazing companies and services to fund our travels.
Where Are You Going? Where Will You Stay?
We are planning primarily on staying in houses and apartments through Airbnb rentals and farmstays in Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. For slow family travel we really need the space to stretch our legs and have some sort of home base. Being able to cook meals and do laundry is a big part of keeping costs down and feel like we really live in our destinations versus hopping from hotel to hotel. I’m looking into some repositioning cruises instead of flights for a change of pace and possibly RV’ing through parts of Australia. We are also members of The Disney Vacation Club and will be using our points for stays in Disney World and Aulani.
This page will grow as we begin our planning and packing and once we hit the road. Stay tuned!
